A series of experiments by Martin Lewis Perl with colleagues at SLAC and Berkeley Lab (LBNL) used SLAC's then-new electron–positron colliding ring, called SPEAR, and the LBNL magnetic detector, to detect and distinguish between leptons, hadrons, and photons.
