Most people don’t realize peacocks once stood as powerful symbols of immortality. In ancient Rome, they were sacred to the goddess Hera and placed around Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum, now known as Castel Sant’Angelo. These statues were crafted in bronze, covered in gold, and only two originals have survived. Later, early Christians adopted the peacock as a symbol of the immortal soul.
